Aethersphere

Aethersphere

The 5th element, Ether (or Aether) is the "null" or "void" from which all the other elements emerge. Tilt has opened up a whole new world of creative possibilities for me and is thus my favorite VR app. This project has stretched both my creative and intellectual muscles equally. In particular, I love the free use of scale to create huge virtual "art installations", like this one - don't look down! I created roughly 30 different 3D models using 3ds Max, then imported them and "painted" them using Tilt's wickedly cool brushes. I'm considering putting together some video tutorials describing the process of exporting .obj models and .mtl materials from 3ds Max and importing them to Tilt via google's Poly website - a process that at times, has been challenging. Tilt's support for .mtl files is somewhat mercurial. For instance, to get reflectivity/specularity to work, I was forced to open .mtl files after exporting from Max and edit a couple of parameters by hand (e.g. setting Ns to 250 and illum to 5) before uploading to Poly. All of the 3D models I created are available for download and remixing by you. Just 'like' any model and it will appear in your Tilt VR under the Poly menu (one of the 'extra' tools menu options). It turns out that Tilt Brush, especially when used this way, is really a gateway to VR app and game design, so I'm excited to see where all of this goes and I'm super impressed by the google team that's responsible for this amazing app. More to come. Enjoy!
